An early morning blast at Carlo's Bakery and Cafe

ILOILO City – Two motorcycle-riding men lobbed a grenade at the bakeshop-restaurant of Mayor Jerry Treñas before dawn yesterday, injuring a security guard and shattering the establishment’s glass façade. The blast occurred at the Carlos Bakeshop parking lot adjacent to Treñas’ residential compound in Brgy. Dungon A, Jaro district around 2:30 a.m. Twenty-nine-year-old bakeshop security guard Marlou Ganancial of Pavia, Iloilo sustained injuries in the stomach. Treñas, who is running for congressman, saw politics written all over the incident. “It was meant to scare and harass me and my family,” he said. “What else could it be? Surely, it could not be about bread and pastries .” ( LOL ) Read More . Of Batchoy and mangoes

I’ve been to Iloilo a few times before and every time I hear its name, the phrase “Namit Gid” immediately pops up in my mind. Well, not too long ago, some friends and I had a most enjoyable “Namit Gid” weekend visit to Iloilo, which included a day-long excursion to nearby Guimaras. With the amiable Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and the friendly Guimaras Gov. Felipe Nava as our hosts, could I have expected otherwise? Deco's Original La Paz batchoy After a short, 50-minute Cebu Pacific flight from Manila, we were met at the airport by representatives of the mayor, with an attractive welcome garland, accentuated with a colorful miniature Dinagyang mask. Leading the welcome committee was the ever-smiling Lea Lara, executive director of the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation Inc. who whisked us off to the welcome dinner hosted by the mayor in Al Dente, at the Sarabia Manor, the city’s biggest hotel. The mayor requested his niece, popular chef Pauline Banusing, to whip up a six-cou...

The "new" Carlo's Bakery and Cafe

After its grand opening last February 28, I made it a point to check out the newly renovated Carlos Bakery and Cafe. From its being a rundown pasalubong center years ago which doesn't deserve a second look, it has reinvented itself not only worthy of a second look but would entice passersby to stop, look and listen ....well to their heart's desire of checking it inside out. A sleek and colorful interior greets you the moment you enter. To the left is their baked goods and desserts section, either for pasalubong or just being part of your order in the cafe. From the usual cookies and biscuits plus breads and pastries to cakes and their famous crema de fruta, it's a treat just even to look at them. To the right is the cafe which is reminiscent of JD at the Roadhouse (in fact the whole place is like JD, but IMO Carlo's has a much better ambiance). Attentive servers would then rush to get your orders. A good place to relax and let time take its course as you dine and watch...
