Bingka sa Mohon

Bingkahan sa Mohon makes one of the most popular bingka places in Iloilo City. It has been one of my blog frustrations before not having a feature on them. I've tried many times before but I ended up with more frustrations - having no more bingkas left or my reserved order was given to others. It's not easy to get them since I live far from where they are located. But finally I ended this streak of bad luck; I got "tons" of bingka from Mohon and I loved it! What makes it delicious aside from the concoction is the amount of coconut strips in each of these small round bingkas. While others have microscopic amount, Mohon bingkas have more than enough that sometimes it feels like eating bucayo rather than bingka . Sold for PhP 10 per pack of four, this quick fix will surely makes one crave for more and oftentimes come back and buy some more. Good thing I bought 5 packs that time, more than enough for me to savour every bite. With the h...

A boxful of bingka from Mohon

A bibingka so filled with coconut strips that I call the bingka from Mohon -  bingkang bukayo. It is always a treat to savor every bite of this famous bingka from Mohon. Each mouthful is teeming with strips of coconut that would put other bingkas to “shame” in terms of coconut meat filling.  They sell bingka by the box (PhP50) and by the paper bag (PhP20/8pcs) and both have the same delectable goodness of the famed bingka from Arevalo. The only downside is that they only make their bingka on Fridays until Mondays. And if you’re not fortunate enough, you’ll find yourself with none for most are already out by noon time – they don’t usually make a very big batch. But you can make reservations for pick-up; just contact them through 0919-572-2581. Yet be really sure of your reservations because sometimes, even those can be “sold out”. The Bingka of Mohon

Along the border of Villa-Arevalo and the town of Oton, Iloilo is a bustling community named Mohon . Nowadays, it is synonymous with the busy passenger terminal serving the southern towns of the province. But there’s more to Mohon than this congregation of jeepneys and passengers - it’s their famous “ bingkahan ”. FAMILY LEGACY “ Bingkahan sa Mohon” started in the early fifties when Mrs. Felicidad C. Animas concocted a recipe for bingka that eventually made their little stall tantamount with the place. She was then able to support her family – from the daily needs to sending all her children to school, with this business. Her children are now in charge of the business and they are contented with its performance even though it does not generate that much profit. “It’s more of the social responsibility of continuing the family legacy of making this special bingka for the 50-year old Mohon is already an i con” they echo. The bingkahan makes rice cakes four ...

Almost an icon: Bingkahan sa Mohon

B ingkahan sa Mohon is almost an icon in Iloilo City for it is synonymous with very delicious bingka. Fulfilling one of my blog frustrations, a few weeks ago I set on a journey to rediscover this very popular bingkahan and I got more than bags and plates of it's famous bingka . I arrived early that time to see they were just preparing to make their famous bingka and that prompted me to have an impromptu gastronomic tour of the nearby area. When I came back an hour later, my order wasn't ready despite my reservations but I didn't mind. I mean it’s just a few minutes of waiting compared to the two times I visited the place and came out empty handed and overly frustrated. So I took some snapshots of how these delicious bingkas are prepared to make the most out of my waiting time. Bingkahan sa Mohon only makes bingka four days a week according to one of the workers I casually talked with. Starting on a Friday they make a somewhat limited batch until Monday for it is only...

A plate of bingka from Mohon

Not only did I buy round bingkas from Mohon but also those in plates. Costing PhP50 per plate, these rectangular bingkas take more time to cook but are often sold first (so it would be much better to reserve beforehand.) This was the first bingka from Mohon that I tasted and it was a good first time that I yearned for more. So I bought two plates the time I went there and it was more than worth the time, money and effort I put on to get them. Aside from being worth the price, "pound for pound", compared to the round bingkas , I love how this big bingka actually taste inside out. It packs more flavour and of course those signature coconut strips which made them stood out. In fact, I could finish one plate all by myself (lol) compared to finishing 20 of those small bingkas . It was a good thing that I reserved through text and confirmed my orders by going there, so I was really assured of these bingkas, which caused so much frustration before but now satisfaction and mo...

Rediscovering the famous Bingkahan sa Mohon

B ingkahan sa Mohon is almost an icon in this part of Iloilo City for it is synonymous with very delicious bingka. On-the-spot gastronomic tour of Villa

It all started when I inquired through text if Bingkahan sa Mohon would be making their popular bingka last Saturday. And after it was confirmed, I literally just took off - excited over the fact that my blog frustrations on this popular bingka would finally come to an end. Though I have blogged about it before but I have to see and buy them for myself to complete the experience so to speak. But when I got there, they were still just preparing and it would take at least an hour before their first batch would come right out of the oven. So that made me think, whether I'll just stay there waiting or go somewhere else to kill time. It took me awhile to decide and chose the latter, quickly excited by the fact that I may finally seek some of the holes-in-the-wall in this district which is out of my usual way. A few days earlier I met with bloggers friends; Lee and Inday Hami at a popular snackshop in Mandurriao known for it's sio pao, sio mai and mami ( Jiecel and Thea's Ref...

The famous "Bingkahan sa Mohon"

Finally, I have my own blogpost about this very famous bingka of Iloilo City. Almost every Ilonggos in forum or blogs mention this native treat and I feel sort of ashamed having this food blog about the delights of Iloilo and not featuring this bingka. Asking some information from fellow bloggers, I planned to visit their store, in, where else, but Mohon near the boundary of Iloilo City and the municipality of Oton. It would have been an easy trip since it just less than 10kms from downtown but it was about to be served to me in a silver platter. Well almost ... I was having my usual night cap at a cafe when I mentioned to my barkada that I'm going to Oton to buy buko pie. He suddenly suggested to also try Mohon bingka and I can order from him since he personally knows someone there. Though it would be very convenient but I'd like a first hand experience so I'll have an adventure to share in my blogpost. But soon I learned that they often run out bingkas to sell or have sc...

F(e)asting on bingka this Semana Santa

Instead of fasting this Holy Week, I got to feast on bingka . Don't bother asking how many pieces I devoured in just one sitting. So I'll just make a rundown of my previous bingka entries to be "in" this Semana Santa . Bingka sa Mohon. One of the more famous bingka s in Iloilo so naturally I was compelled to blog about it. For Php50, this uniquely rectangular bingka is both a visual and gastronomical feast since it doesn't only look good but tastes good also as it overflows with coconut strips that I refer to it as bukayo cooked bingka style. Ah! Nang Palang's. Its really looks very enticing just looking at the buko strips inside out. Yeah just look at it but dont bother eating for it will disappoint you bigtime. The buko was okay but it was the "base" (I dont know what to call it) that sucked. It was across between a mamon made with native ingredients that was half cooked and a cake that went " sapatos ". At PhP17 each, just scrap...
