Iloilo Bird House snackshop

Nope, this is not an aviary in the city but rather small foodshop located at the St. Elizabeth Center along Valeria street. Serving short orders like sandiwches, pancit, pasta, pizza and other food items, it's claim to fame, so to speak, are their cakes and pastries. With an affordable menu, its a very good place to simply relax while watching the hustle and bustle of the city. Though they are not as fancy as those big name bakeshops they have items worthy of praise. Two of their best sellers are the buttered chiffon cake slices and lemon squares. Their chicken pie is also a personal favorite. Finally was able to squeeze in some time to visit this foodshop again. Luckily, it was empty that time so I had the whole place by myself asking several questions and taking some pictures. I settled for their pancit palabok and apple crumble pie. I also bought some choco beehives to compliment my cupcake tree.

An afternoon at Dulgies (NAT again!)

Another afternoon filled with sweet and delectable cakes from Dulgies. Just the usual orders that always (almost) turns out to be great. Natie, in fact, was blurting praises in each bite especially with her Mango Nostalgia. It was so good that she even has this voluntary "thumbs up" caught on camera. (lol) When you have tried all their cakes (just like me), just go back to the basic and have their Blueberry Cheesecake. Its always satisfying. My current favorite, Nutty Carrot cake. A healthy alternative somehow. Mango Nostalgia is fast becoming one of their more popular cakes. A giveaway for this Valentine season. Its the thought that counts anyway.

Picea Restaurant and Bakeshop

Reposted en toto from www.exploreiloilo.com with permission. Picea is known as a cake and dessert shop in Iloilo City. For quite some time now, they have been creating sumptuous cakes for Ilonggos during their most special celebrations like weddings, baptisms, and birthdays. After reading about Picea on MyIloilo, I learned that they weren’t all about cakes and had other foods in their menu as well. Curiosity had lead me to their shop in Mabini Street, near Central Elementary School and SPED. While I was waiting for my order, I was able to talk to the owner, who gladly accommodated me with my questions. I had learned that she together with her husband mastered the art of cooking in the Center of Culinary Arts in Manila and personally prepare the food themselves. Neapolitan Cheesecake of Picea The food in Picea is certainly not the cheapest in the city but they offset that by providing quality and great service. I found my gastronomic experience in Picea pleasurable; I would certainly...

Something new at Dulgies ...and more

Ever since Chymera (of http://www.exploreiloilo.com/ ) raved about Dulgies' latest offering, banana-strawberry cake, I immediately checked on my calendar and planned my Dulgies trip. Today, I had to pass by the cafe again and again to check the crowd; the smaller the better since I am going to take pictures. Finally I decided enter the cafe an hour before closing time upon seeing only two customers. Good thing there's still few slices left of my "cake of the moment". I also decided to have another cake, pecan-caramel cheesecake, since it was the only one I haven’t tasted yet among their display. Banana-Strawberry Cake Made with layers of banana cake and white icing and topped with strawberry preserves. The banana cake layer tamed the sweetness of the icing and strawberry, but it still too sweet for me that I didn't finish the icing and toppings. For me it was good but not spectacular. Pecan-Caramel Cheesecake It’s just the usual cheesecake with pecan and caramel...

Tinapayan Bakeshop

Part of the Iloilo Supermart "family", Tinapayan is my personal choice for the best commercial bakeshop in the city. With quality and affordable baked goods ranging from breads and cookies to cakes and pizza, they have a wide variety of baked items to bring out the child in you. From the usual pan de sal, special ube and cheese ensaymadas , local faves like galletas, principe and meringue to ice cream rolls, egg scallions, pizza bars, madrilenas , assorted dessert "squares ".... the list goes on and on. Though they “carry over” their cakes and pastries to their sister company, Coffeebreak , I really hope they will have their own cafe where patrons can relax and enjoy all what they have to offer. Pizza, dinner rolls and crema de fruta from Tinapayan as served during our Noche Buena last Christmas.

"Thank you for not dieting"

My recent Birdhouse (food) trips I've been wanting to try their pancit molo for so long that I made sure I ordered it during my next visit. I complimented it with bacon cheeseburger and silvanas. In the end, it was the silvanas that saved the day. A quick for two snack at the Birdhouse recently turned out to be a feast since our table was almost overflowing with goodies. We had two silvanas, a sans rival, an apple pie, a chicken pie and buttered chiffon. We also had a mix pizza as our last minute order. (Pictures of other items in the previous entries) Together with an avocado shake and a clear soda, it was still light on the pocket, around 220 pesos. We surely "welcomed" the snackhouse's motto (hanging on the wall) of "Thank you for not dieting."

The Bird House (again!)

This is one place where you can truly relax while feasting on almost all what they have. Relax , in the sense that you can almost always have the place on your own and feast, because your budget will go a long way. For this visit I had their specialty, buttered chiffon and lemon square. I also tried their mixed pizza, though it was nothing to rave about. Its just a mix of their other pizza toppings; ham, cheese, sardines. But their crust was really thin, just like a hard pita or better yet like Piaya crisps After finishing off these three my eyes fell on their ham and cheese bread. Almost as big as my palm, this got me curious so I got one. Its a simplified calzone but for 22 pesos it was worth it though not something to be raved about. The bread was much better than the filling, I must say.

Dulgies overload

A visit to this cafe will always be credited with a blogpost. Yesterday's lunch for two consisted of a sandwich, a pasta and of course, cakes. Creamy sausage pasta... Linguine in white sauce with two kinds of sausages. D Club sandwich. Usual club sandwich fillings on a not so usual bread, one made of black rice. Midnight caramel cake. Cream filled chocolate cake with caramel sauce. Blueberry cheesecake. Still a good order even if its usual
