The Original MARINA Seafood La Paz Batchoy

The All-Time Favorite Ilonggo Comfort Food, Now Guilt-Free! Originally and Distinctly Ilonggo. In 1945 after the war, a local butcher at the Iloilo La Paz Public Market was looking for ways to make use of the pork and beef innards and bones left at the end of the day. He made steaming broth out of the bones, added some shrimp and chicken stock, tossed in the chopped stir-fried innards, some chicken and beef strips, a dash of soy sauce, poured the steaming broth over a bowl of miki noodles, then sprinkled with leeks and chicharon, and finally finished by cracking a raw egg on top for good measure. This created a dish with a distinctly salty-sweet-spicy flavor called “batchoy”, which eventually became the all-time comfort food of the Ilonggos, usually paired with pandesal or puto, and enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, merienda, dinner and midnight snack until this day. Originally and Distinctly MARINA. In keeping with its proud Ilonggo heritage as well as promoting the health benefits of sea...

Seafood batchoy, at last!

It was the Holy Week last 2008 when I first heard of a seafood batchoy to be served on a limited basis by Deco's. But luck ran out for since I went to Mindanao then and when I came back, the run was over. So it was just in my dreams and hopes that it will be back, no matter when, who how, why, where, etc. And I had the widest grin upon seeing this on Facebook that I immediately marked the date. Marina Seafoods is already an institution in Iloilo City and is among the more successful Ilonggo businesses that has ventured out of Iloilo City. It was synonymous as the party place and "gimikan" prior to the emergence of the likes of Barracks and eventually Smallville. It has a wide array of Ilonggo dishes and specialties that wherever you are, it almost tastes like home. I even had dinner and breakfast at Marina when I was in Manila last year. And they had this fantastic KBL and laswa that looks good btu tastes even better. But before I start my litany on the good eats I had,...

Native Ilonggo cuisine at Marina Seafoods Restaurant

Marina Seafoods is among Iloilo's most popular restaurant and among the pioneer nightspots along the stretch of Diversion Road in Iloilo City. It's already an icon in this part of the country even before most people associated the name as Claudine Baretto's role (as a mermaid named Marina) in a TV series of the same title. Incidentally, Claudine herself is an Ilongga. Today, this restaurant is among Iloilo City's "exports" as Marina brings Ilonggo cuisine within reach to Ilonggos and non-Ilonggos alike in other parts of the country especially in Metro Manila. Slowly but surely, it expanded as a full scale restaurant in some of the hippest locations in the Metro like in Glorietta in Makati and SkyGarden at SM North EDSA to name a few.But mostly, one gets the more authentic feel and taste of authentic cuisine when it is served in a no nonsense manner. Like this one at the food court of Market, Market at The Fort. It is in such manner that one appreciates more ho...

Iloilo "Originals"

Joy-joy's Kalan-an along the Coastal Road in Dumanagas is fast becoming aa favorite stop among native food lovers. Its no non-sense style of cooking plus its relatively low price spread through words of motuh among its loyal patron's that with virtually no advertisement, it rakes in the visitors Krystal Ice , as the name suggests, first started out as cold desserts shop and eventually evolved into a complete restaurant now serving shorts orders and combo meals but still its their halo-halo and ice cream creations that brings in the customers Even the big name restaurants in the city are branching out into the food court scene. This enables them to reach more customers in a more convenient way. Breakthrough 's main restaurant is along the seaside of Villa district with another one at La Salette building in Valeria street. Marina is along the Iloilo River in Diversion Road. Completing this trio is Ocean City having its main branch along Gen. Luna Street. Only Marina am...
