A Christmas luncheon at Camp Alfredo in Guimaras

The zip line and the adventure facilities are not the only attractions at Camp Alfredo in Guimaras . As one communes with nature - the lush greens, the fresh air, the sound of the stream, the natural flora and fauna, during a visit, gastronomy also becomes an attraction itself. And I have proven it once more, a few days before 2011 came to an end during Camp Alfredo's first ever Christmas Lunch Party. With guests coming mostly from Manila and the US, it was also a reunion of sorts for the families who were there. As always food becomes an integral part of any family gathering and this was among them. With the luncheon catered by Barrio Inasal , which also serves the fares at the Camp during regular days, it was a galore of grilled specialties heralded by the specialty of the house - chicken inasal . Among the best chicken inasals, Barrio Inasal prides itself of having the authentic kind and taste plus it is grilled upon order so it may take a while. Though these ones were ...

Barbecue galore at Barrio Inasal

It was a rather gloomy day but it didn’t stop me from another gastronomic adventure. The prospect of having lunch (and blogging about it) at Barrio Inasal inside Aurora Subdivision, perked me up despite the rain and that nasty radiation scare. I’ve been to Barrio Inasal many times before but not this branch since it’s out of my usual way. I was more frequent at their branch near Colegio de San Jose in Jaro before and the convenience brought about by their branch across Amigo Plaza Mall also have drawn me there. But this one near the University of San Agustin offers a more refr eshing ambiance on top of the usual great eats. Located at a corner lot inside a residential/commercial compound, it’s just a short walk from two main streets, Gen. Luna and San Agustin (formerly Jalandoni) streets. A large al fresco banquet ha ll dominates the scene but one can opt to dine in the grassy area, weather permitting. A more-than-satisfying lunch as it turned out to be for we had the best Barrio In ...

Iloilo: Beyond batchoy

This feature published by the Manila Standard Today narrates how gastronomy played an important role in the author's recent visit to Iloilo City. It simply shows that food is very much a part of the city's "tourism" and as the title says it's "Beyond batchoy". Enjoy this article (written by Nana Nadal) more with some photos from Flavours of Iloilo archives. Mention Iloilo and batchoy is not far behind. With everyone sending me off to the province with “enjoy the batchoy” messages, I was half expecting to live on the noodle soup for the duration of my three-day stay. After devouring a bowlful paired with soft white puto at Ted’s Old Timer La Paz Batchoy along Valeria Street, I realized that I had nothing to worry about, I would have been perfectly happy eating it for several meals. I’m no batchoy connoisseur but I think Ted’s 65 years in the business and 34 branches nationwide prove that their recipe’s a winner. I had another round of the dish at Days ...

Barrio Inasal

I trooped to Barrio Inasal's more convenient branch along Delgado Street to continue my quest for the best chicken inasal in town. It was past the busy lunch period when I came in so ordering was just a breeze. I was just dismayed that they don’t have chicken liver inasal. Pecho will be my standard order for this quest and other side orders don’t matter though that time there was no more turo-turo food items left. I chose to sit on the spot where my picture taking session wouldn't be obvious and it was only after starting my photograph session that I regretted it since I was facing their barbecue counter thus their workers were all eyes on me. Anyway, their condiment bottles were sort of a deja vu since it was exactly like those in my first quest (see Mang Inasal ). Only the absence of the third bottle (chicken oil) reminded me I am in another restaurant. This branch of Barrio Inasal has a more modern ambiance compared to their other branches. With modern furniture and surro...

Inasal nga atay

How can I say NO to this delectable inasal na atay sang baka ?

Around the gastronomy block and more ....

Without much to do while waiting for my appointment, I decided to take a leisurely walk around the block bounded by Valeria-Delgado-Iznart and Solis streets. These streets alone would account for more than half of City Proper's food shops. Also see City Proper Gastronomy guide . First along the way was Barrio Inasal 's modern branch along Delgado street. Next was the "MMDA" inspired motif of Amigo Terrace Hotel's snackbar and bakeshop, Sweet Treats. Im glad it finally had a great location since before the snackshop was located beside the mall's main entrance so it tends to be very crowded while the bakeshop was in the center of the mall. Now that the hotel and mall are undergoing renovation, good thing they finally placed the two side by side and along side the hotel's entrance for an alfresco experience. Among my favorite items from their bakeshop are bichocoy, teren teren, spanish bread and english muffin. They also have native items like fresh lumpia...
