Masa Podrida from Cheling's Delicacies


Just like what a popular tagline says "Once you pop, you can't stop". Except for the  popping, you really can't stop eating once you've tried these short bread biscuits known as masa podrida from Cheling's Delicacies. It was around 10 days when Mr. Eugene Jamerlan and I dropped by the Montelibano compound in Mandurriao.
As I was going to Cebu in a few days then, we cleared all their stock of masa podrida that day as Casa Gorordo, one of the best lifestyle museums in the Philippines, got some orders. So we bought around 20 boxes and having tasted these back, i got myself two boxes which had me popping (wait there's no popping)-lol since then.
Just as simple as it is it was delicious. My friends can't help but also be addicted since each bite deserves another and in no time at all, we finish a whole pack.
One of them describes this to be a polvoron made into a crisp cookie. Whether you agree or not, it is much better if you can taste these masa podrida. Each box costs PhP100 and contains three packs having 7 biscuits so that's around 5 pesos for each bite of heaven. 
Other than this short bread, they also have Carrot Cakes, Prune Cakes, Chocolate Cakes, Cassava Cake, Orange Walnut Squares and baked products like lasagna among others.

Cheling's Delicacies is located at the Montelibano Compound a few meters after the Carpenter Bridge if you're coming from Molo. Coming from Mandurriao or Tabucan, it's that compound of bungalows before you reach the bridge. There's a restaurant named Jan and Drei (formerly Messe) in the area. A native delicacy called Inday-inday

Now you may ask, what is Inday-Inday ? It's another repetitive-feminine named native delicacy that is made from rice like its more popular sister - baye-baye . While the latter is has its own original flavor and make, inday-inday is actually a combination of two well loved native delicacies - muasi ( palitaw ) and bukayo . But the muasi portion is not the the usual palitaw  recipe for the it's more firm and gummy (I don't know the English term for kid-ol ). Actually its more like a hardened kutsinta and this makes it more to my liking since I'm not really fond of muasi in the first place.  And its not quite easy to find inday-inday in the market today, though I've seen and tried it in Sabor Ilonggo stalls but their's is more like suman latik for the based is ibos -like. A confession to start this blogpost - I consider MUASI as one of my hated native delicacies given its bland taste even with the sugar dip. But that was back during my childhood days. Maybe be because I may have used less sugar or might have completely forgotten to "dip" it at all.
