I still can’t get over the gastronomic ecstasy brought about by the biggest barbecue party in Iloilo last Sunday at The Avenue. Timed on an important day, the event proved to be the highlight of the Fathers Day celebration to those who attended the affair.
It’s been almost a week since then but I still feel “high”- as in “sugar high“. Quite explicable for someone who went to a barbecue party but considered the desserts as the highlight – lol. A table was set up to showcase the sweets that would end the party on a sweet note. Now let me explain – no, show you – that situation.
First to catch everybody’s attention were surely these obvioualy eye catching mini cupcakes set up in the center of the dessert station. Very appealing to the eyes - the play of colours, the simple yet elegant designs and of course the fact that you can have as many as you want without having to “repeat” are just among that excited me. But in the end they were just ordinary cupcakes - made very appealing. I didn’t even get to taste the toppings for I removed them.
A close second were the blueberry rhapsody verrines. Verrine is a confection, originally from France, made by layering ingredients in a small glass. It can be either sweet or savoury, making a dessert or snack. And those with much creativity created a perfect combination of colours and flavours as well not to mention a dainty design on top. Fresh strawberry and grape side by side with a drop of cream and white chocolate adorned the top layer of the verrine. It tasted good but still it looked way better.
Crème brulee in small "dip" bowls proved to be elegant and smart as well. Just good for a bite or two, one can limit the indulgence of this dessert considered to be a tamed version of leche flan. Surely, it was good to have some sweets that actually tasted not so sweet but still is sweet.
It seems I am lost what this next dessert is. It just seems like a new way of presenting the popular brazo de Mercedes. The carameled eggwhite cake topped with nuts tastes like the outer covering of the brazos while the sweet egg yolk loaded center forms an ornate design around it. Yes, it tasted almost like brazo de mercedes. And finally, you’ve guessed it; I saved the best for last. At least for me, these unassuming and simple choco bars proved to be my favorite. I’m not sure though but the inside is somewhat a cross between silvanas and marshmallow, filled with desiccated coconut then dipped in white chocolate and adorned with cream and more chocolate. I guess it’s the fact that it tasted better than it looked like made it to the top of my list. The contrast of the soft and chewy inside with the firm and crisp outside provided something for the senses.
Indeed it ended on a sweet note and had me sugar high. So do these explain why I am still am now?
