Cooling off at Daily Buns Cafe and Bakery

The cool interiors of the new branch Daily Buns Cafe and Bakery was the perfect hideaway from the searing Monday afternoon heat. "Cool" both refers to the more than ambient temperature and to the interiors of the cafe. With brown and yellow shades all throughout, it also complemented what they had on display (that time.)

My stomach was still full but looking at their display of cakes and muffins among others that, my order of butterscotch shake got an extra blueberry muffin that got my attention. I had to pass over those mouth watering cakes since I had the feeling they would be too heavy for me that time and my muffin choice was just right.

And light too. I love how it became to be crisp outside yet light and fluffy inside. For only PhP25 it was already a good treat, not to mention the butterscotch shake I had. It was a perfect combo and tastes like the butterscotch we are all familiar with.

This branch was opened last July 2011 but Daily Buns had been in the business for many years years. The main branch is located along Gen. Luna Street in the shadows of the flyover and it is where the yummy cakes and breads are made.

Now garbed for the upcoming Halloween, their new branch is among the perfect places in the city to find some from the heat and the hustle and bustle of the city. Not only they serve desserts but also a variety of pasta, sandwiches, pizza and breads.

I just love the wide variety of breads they have from the usual favorite like ensaymada and cheeserolls to pork floss and meat filled and topped buns like pizza dog, pepperoni & cheese and chicken pesto with walnut. They also have loaves of bread from the plain and simple to the ones infused with flavours like chocolate, coffee and the "Hawaiian" loaf.

The choices seem endless that that visit was just short to enjoy all of them even visually so this surely won't be my last as I see myself enjoying more cakes, pastries and breads at Daily Buns Cafe and Bakery.

The gabi (taro) is just one of those plants which is edible from "roots to tops". The most popular of which is the tuber part which is used in a variety of dishes and mostly in combination with coconut milk. Its leaves, of course, is the main ingredient of a Bicol specialty, laing . It is dried then chopped and sauteed with other ingredients including, again, coconut milk. Then there is takway . The local term for its tendrils/runner, that part which is torn between being a stem or a root for it neither grows upwards nor downwards - it grows sideways . Scraped off of its outer skin, takway is often a key ingredient in vegetable dishes like laswa and the gabi tuber with coconut milk and local snails know as bago-ngon . Suman Latik is one of my favorite native delicacies - plain suman/ibos topped with sweetened coconut strips or bukayo . Most of the time those sold in the markets have this two (suman and bukayo) already in one wrap and all you have to to is devour it.
