Sandiya is the Ilonggo term for pakwan or watermelon. It' the fruit of the summer as the season brings in the perfect weather for these melons to thrive (and attack zombies - lol). Years ago only the common (red) ones are very much available but recently yellow varieties almost caught up in popularity.
I would never have given this much thought of blogging about them again if not for the "hype" that these local watermelons are now sold in Manila from the roadsides to big groceries as well. Thanks to the RoRo system, local produce can now reach more and more people throughot the country with minimum overhead cost.
